Uhde success story

Arxada wanted to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) at Visp plant Switzerland. Now, one EnviNOx® system saves up to 600,000 t/year of CO2 equivalents, which is comparable to taking every Swiss passenger car off the road – twice.

One system saves annual emissions equal to over 9 Million passenger cars

Arxada is a global science-based specialty chemicals business, headquartered in Basel (Switzerland), with around 3,200 employees in 24 production sites and 14 R&D centers worldwide.

As a major step towards sustainable production, they decided to bring GHG emissions at their Visp site down to a minimum. For Arxada, dealing with “laughing gas” (N20) emissions was a first-of-its kind problem, and they needed expert help to solve it.

Two key factors provided the answers to Arxada’s needs: an expert consulting from thyssenkrupp Uhde process engineering specialists, and the modular design of the EnviNOx® system.

While originally developed for emission reduction in nitric acid plants – where Uhde is a global leader –, it has already been installed in various other industrial plants such as caprolactam or adipic acid. Today, EnviNOx® is a modular set of ready-to-implement solutions for a huge variety of applications where reduction of NOx and N2O is necessary.

An on-site visit of EnviNOx® specialists quickly led to a comprehensive solutions that covered Arxada’s needs. The installation was configurated to fit into the existing plant with minor adaptions and carried out with minimum downtime.

The successful implementation of EnviNOx® has led to the desired decrease in greenhouse gas emissions at the Visp site. Specifically, the project has exceeded the performance guarantees and reliably removes NOx emissions and N2O emissions to almost 0 ppmv.
