Propylene glycol production plants - add downstream value and flexibility to your propylene

Propylene glycol (PG) production offers a unique opportunity for propylene oxide (PO) and polyol producers to diversify their product slate. Propylene glycol production is the second largest end-use for propylene oxide after polyether polyols. Glycols are pure substances and the simplest of all PO derivatives. They are easy to make, easy to handle and used in countless applications.

thyssenkrupp’s glycol technology is characterized by high turndown ratio and agile ramp up behavior. Thus, it is well suited to serve flexible market demands. The glycol process can cushion market fluctuations in related product segments like polyether polyols by shifting production as needed to generate highest value from PO feedstock.

Make your market entry easy: combine glycol and polyol production

The simple and robust PG process is easy to startup. Commodity glycols are easily marketable and can generate early revenues while other products are established in the market.

Propylene glycols are typical starters for a wide variety of polyol products. On-site glycol production and storage makes polyol producers independent with respect to this important raw material.

A safe and modular design – and synergies between processes

Safety

thyssenkrupp and Evonik have jointly licensed the HPPO process for production of propylene oxide for almost 20 years. Success in multiple HPPO projects as licensor and engineering contractor provides thyssenkrupp with great experience in the design of propylene oxide processing systems. This experience underpins our propylene glycol process design, safety and engineering standards, and associated procedures to ensure utmost safety in plant operations and handling of propylene oxide.

Synergies in an integrated chemical complex

In a joint chemical production environment where PG-production is combined with HPPO and/or polyols, the client can benefit from various synergies between the plants. This starts already in the engineering and implementation phase. Systems for utilities supply and effluent treatment can be combined to provide their services more efficiently than multiple individual solutions for stand-alone plants. In the operation phase, human resources for plant operation and maintenance can be shared. The same is true for laboratory staff and analytic equipment. There are also strategic benefits like independence from raw material supply and fast reaction to product market demands.

Modular plant design

The plant can be erected following the conventional stick-build approach in regions with low construction cost and an available skilled workforce. Alternatively, thyssenkrupp also has considerable experience in design and fabrication of fully modularized process plants.  We can transport and erect pre-assembled and pre-commissioned modular plants with better construction quality and shorter delivery than is otherwise generally achievable – with minimal site construction hours and minimal impact on base operations at established sites.

Propylene glycol production - process description

thyssenkrupp’s propylene glycol process enables the production of propylene glycols (PG) from propylene oxide (PO). Propylene glycols comprise a product family of monopropylene glycol (MPG), dipropylene glycol (DPG) and longer chain Heavy Glycols (HG). The propylene glycol process is a continuous process ensuring consistently high product quality.

Propylene glycol technology from thyssenkrupp: products suitable for food and pharma applications

High purity propylene oxide and water are the only ingredients in thyssenkrupp’s propylene glycol process – no other chemicals or catalysts are involved. That simplifies raw material quality control and creates absolutely pure products. This is of high value for product application in sensitive sectors like food, pharma and personal care as the glycols do not contain any known allergens. Furthermore, Halal and KOSHER requirements can be fullfilled owing to the 100% synthetic origin of the raw materials.
