Chris Stegemann embarked on his journey at thyssenkrupp Uhde as a trainee on April 1, 2024. At 26 years old, having just completed his Master’s in Chemical Engineering with a focus on Process Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Münster, he has already gained valuable insights across different departments and varied experiences.
Research Abroad
Chris’ academic journey has been diverse. During his studies, he conducted his thesis work in collaboration with several companies. His bachelor’s thesis was completed at BASF in Münster, where he also worked as a student intern during his master’s studies. His master’s thesis took him to thyssenkrupp Polysius, a business unit of thyssenkrupp, where he became part of #GENERATIONTK. He has also conducted research on industrial decarbonization at thyssenkrupp Polysius. ”In addition, I spent a semester abroad in Norway, researching the recycling of lithium-ion batteries,” which he states rounded out his education.
Diversity Guaranteed!
As a trainee, Chris’s daily work is diverse and educational. He regularly rotates through departments to gain a broad spectrum of impressions and knowledge. These rotations allow him to immerse himself deeply and build a comprehensive portfolio of skills and expertise. ”During my trainee period, I move from department to department in phases, gaining significant insights. This thorough training equips me with a comprehensive portfolio of knowledge about specific technologies and processes. After this period, based on my experiences and strengths, I can choose a department for permanent placement.”
Sustainability plays a vital role in both: Chris’ professional and personal life. Throughout his studies and thesis work, his focus has always been on sustainable solutions. At thyssenkrupp Uhde, he works in an environment where he and his colleagues share a common aim. ”All colleagues are united in pursuing the goal of an environmentally friendly future. High sustainability standards are applied and researched in every area and process.” In his personal life, Chris promotes sustainability through waste separation and minimizing car use, though he still sees room for improvement.
Mission: Making the Chemical Industry into a Greener One
Chris chose his position at thyssenkrupp Uhde for several reasons. The company’s mission to make the chemical industry more sustainable resonates deeply with him: ”This mission to transform the chemical industry into a greener one is incredibly inspiring to me. I’ve always had a strong personal interest in this area.”
Maximize learning and understand strengths and weaknesses better – this is a daily routine for Chris. He particularly values the openness and helpfulness of his colleagues at thyssenkrupp Uhde. ”Regardless of their level, everyone is very willing to help and support one another.” And it’s not just the supportive work atmosphere that impresses Chris: He encourages young professionals to consider the industry as it is currently and to look at what will be particularly exciting and essential for our collective future.
Chris emphasizes that enthusiasm for new technologies and a strong desire to learn are crucial in harnessing the many opportunities for optimization. And despite everything, there’s still time for leisure: To balance things out, he spends a lot of time with his friends, including playing football in a club. He is also a passionate skier.
