Sahabuddin Ahmed is an expert in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE). His motto: “Every safety observation is a life saved.” Although his journey wasn’t always smooth, his passion for safety has led him to a pivotal role at thyssenkrupp Uhde. How did he manage to build such a strong safety culture?
A Changing Safety Culture
Sahabuddin Ahmed is a dedicated HSE expert focused on establishing a strong safety culture. While his father wanted him to become a doctor, Sahabuddin was drawn more towards a military career. Fate, however, led him to the world of health and safety. Safety standards in India used to be a big issue. Helmets and protective gear? Not a given. He had to take care of these things himself with contractors.
A lot has changed in the past 10-12 years. Since joining thyssenkrupp Uhde in 2008, Sahabuddin has made significant strides in creating one of the best safety cultures. His independence in his role, adherence to processes and the management's openness to taking necessary actions are the reasons why he feels so connected to the company.
Work and Home – The Perfect Mix
Today, Sahabuddin has recently shifted to the Mumbai office after his stint at the Numaligarh Refinery Limited in Assam, close to his birthplace. He fondly remembers his childhood, especially his time as an NCC (National Cadet Corps) cadet, trekking through the hills and wandering along the Brahmaputra. He also recalls the challenging but beautiful 100-mile bike ride from Sivasagar to Dibrugarh.
His mother, a teacher, instilled in him a love for reading. Every month, she would buy him two books that he had to read and summarize. Besides reading, Sahabuddin enjoys playing football and cooking. His family, especially his children, encourages him to cook Assamese dishes when he visits Kakinada.
Staying Safe Despite Challenges
The unpredictable weather and heavy rainfall in Assam – Sahabuddin knows these conditions can affect project timelines. Every day starts with the awareness that things can go wrong if safety is not prioritized. His goal is to raise safety awareness among all employees through weekly discussions, sharing experiences and maintaining constant vigilance. Because every safety observation can save lives.
He might have saved lives as a doctor, but at thyssenkrupp Uhde, he found his place to promote a strong safety culture and protect people. His story shows how determination and genuine commitment to safety are crucial for creating a positive work environment.
